Gay Budapest · Metropolis Guide

Budapest

Budapest is the capital and largest city in Hungary - a member state of the European Union. Located in the northwest of the state, close to the borders of Austria and Slovakia, Budapest is home to nearly 3 million people in it's urban area.

Officially established in 1873 after the merging of Buda and Pest, the history of Budapest is as fascinating as it is turbulent. When admiring the city's many grand art-nouveau buildings it's easy to forget the metropolis was heavily damaged during the second world war and endured a repressive communist regime in the 50's.

Nowadays, Budapest is a bustling cultural and commercial hub with a whole host of things to attract the 4.4 million tourists that visit the city year in year out.

Hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars are comparatively affordable and good value compared with other European capitals.

The elegant streets and the nineteenth century, fin de siècle architecture of the Hungarian capital epitomize the grand and optimistic style in which Budapest both saw – and sees – itself. An eastern European city that looked westward even when behind the Iron Curtain, the capital has a lengthy history of society and liberalism. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts more than 100 museums and galleries, as well as a nightlife scene regarded as one of the continent’s finest, whether you’re linear or gay. The city’s LGBTQ people is open and socially accepted, with a form of civil union legalised in 2007, and an annual Celebration celebration which has run since 1993. Wondering what to do in Budapest?
