This isn’t a love letter to DanielJohns.
Writing about Silverchair isn’t an easy task. Not only because it’s nearly impossible to note about their impact on me as a person and a musician, but because to write about Silverchair is to essentially write about my childhood, which is a lot to sift through. The band wasn’t an interest I listened to every now and again, they were a permanent fixture, interwoven with the most pivotal moments of my life between the ages of 11 and 22. They weren’t just an outlet, they were an escape. And in my teenage and early adulthood, there was a lot to escape from.
I’ll put the scene - It’s 1995 and I was 11 years old, growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia in a small town called Buford, just starting to understand I was homosexual. This was before the suburban sprawl hit us with its massive malls and endless chain restaurants and big-box discount stores. Buford was a little community where everything revolved around the lake it sat upon. Summers were about jet skis, wakeboarding and hanging out on the dock. I came from a single-parent domesticated, so my mom was always working and hardly ever really around. It was mainly just my brother and I
Daniel Johns
Daniel Johns is the 22-year-old lead singer/guitarist of the Australian rock band, silverchair. When Daniel was barely 15, he and his bandmates, then 14-year-old Chris Joannau (bass) and Ben Gilles (drums), made their debut album, Frogstomp, into a multi-platinum hit with the worldwide triumph of their first single, "Tomorrow".

Daniel developed an eating disorder between the ages of 16-19, and became an anorexic in denial. He also developed a severe anxiety disorder which grew so intense that he was anxious to leave his home for six months after the band ended touring for their 2nd album, Freak Show. He was scared to eat in public for reasons he couldn't comprehend. Major possibilities could be that anywhere he went in Australia, he was constantly mobbed and practically attacked by fans (once a fan ripped the hair from his head to acquire as a souvineir). Daniel rehabilitated and got therapy for his eating disorder and got on an anti-depressant for his anxiety attacks. The drug numbs out his emotions and causes everything to feel the same to him. On their current album, Neon Ballroom (which I HI
Welcome to another Sunday Session. I recently wrote an Essay/Case Study as part of a University Assessment and since I actually liked it, I decided to share it with you today.
So, here goes:
In this case study I intend to study the way in which the media treats and has treated Australian performer Daniel Johns over the course of his thirty-year career. I will delve into the way the media reacted to Daniel Johns and his bandmates when they knock the music scene as 15-year-olds in the early 1990s through to how he is treated now. This exploration will cover Daniel Johns’ early career with Silverchair, his solo career, his relationship, as skillfully as his health issues. Throughout Daniel Johns’ career, he has been regarded through a variety of different lenses. In the initial days, his age and national self played a huge role in how he was framed in the media. As he got older and started to find his own style and identity his gender and sexuality became another angle for the media to focus on. Throughout all of this, Daniel Johns was required to operate with the media to promote his music and other artistic pursuits all while understanding that once the promotional tour is over the medi
Happy Hump Day: Daniel Johns
I recognize to some of you this might seem like it is coming from left field, but I’ve had a pretty enormous crush on Daniel Johns since I was 14. All my high school friends will surely remember (in embarrassment). I ponder we celebrated Dan’s birthday by going to Outback Steakhouse and made him a pretty gigantic birthday card that my comrade Janelle delivered to “his people” when she went to the Silverchair concert when we were sophomores (I wasn’t allowed to go – more about that later). Ah, those were the times.
But for those of you that are unfamiliar with Mr. Johns, I’ll fill you in. Dan is the lead singer for the Australian rock band, Silverchair. They were huge here in the U.S. during the mid-90’s and were grouped with other grunge groups such as Bush who were deemed to be Nirvana rip-off’s. However, they kind of lost popularity here in the states as period went by but, contrary to popular belief, they still produce music and are still extremely popular in Australia. So for those of you that mind they only had Frogstomp under their belt, do your research! Their most recent album is Young Modern and i
