    This Book is Gay

This Book Is Gayis a 2014 young individual self-help book written by Juno Dawson to help teenagers grasp the world of LGBTQ+ identities. Dawson is a prolific creator, writing both fiction and nonfiction for a young-adult audience. This Book Is Gay also addresses parents and cisgender heterosexual teenagers with LGBTQ+ friends and loved ones, providing support with a variety of resources. The novel faced censorship in Alaska in 2015 for its sexual teaching material. Dawson came out as a transgender woman in 2015 and wrote a follow-up publication about her experiences as a transgender woman. This book is titled What’s the T? and serves as a companion piece to This Book Is Lgbtq+ that explores gender identity.

Dawson uses humor in This Guide Is Gay to communicate complex and stigmatized ideas to people who don’t fully understand what it means to be Homosexual. Illustrations by Spike Gerrell communicate complex information through infographics and support Dawson’s humorous tone. Each chapter is interspersed with survey responses from LGBTQ+ people across the globe; these anecdotes and testimony give a wider view into each topic than one person could achieve on their own.

Juno Dawson, born in 1981, is a prolific author of young adult fiction and non-fiction. She has published young adult books regularly since 2012. Dawson is a transgender woman; when she originally published This Book Is Gay, she presented publicly as a cisgender gay man. The book was originally published under her old legal name (often called a “deadname” by transgender people). However, she had begun transitioning privately at the time of publication. This Book Is Gay was written from her animation experiences within the Queer community and uses her expertise in communicating with a young adult audience.

Dawson is a College Role Model for the Stonewall organization and regularly visits schools to talk on LGBTQ+ issues. She previously worked as a primary school teacher before focusing on writing full-time. Dawson uses her craft, both as a educator and a young grown-up author, to present her information in ways that are easily digestible to young adults. Dawson plays with the form of text, frequently bolding some words or writing others in all capital letters, to convey emphasis and stress to resemble the ways young adults communicate.
