“We weren’t like, ‘Let’s build music for this collective or anything like that,'” says Tucker Halpern. “But it actually ended up, pretty excitingly, that a lot of fans name in all sorts of ways. And it actually does end up organism a lot of the LGBT community at a lot of our shows. And it’s the coolest thing ever.”

Together, the two straight, New York-based musicians make up the up-and-coming pop duo Sofi Tukker, which only started recording a year ago. They’ve already snagged a Grammy nomination for Best Gyrate Recording with the charming first single “Drinkee,” a hit in Australia, Italy and Costa Rica and featuring Hawley-Weld singing in Portuguese. Fluent in three languages — the third is German — the 24-year-old met Halpern at their alma mater, Brown University. Halpern, a 26-year-old Boston native, started dabbling in music production after a prolonged illness permanently sidelined his lifelong aspire of a basketball career.

I recently got to chat with Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern about the release of their new EP Soft Animals and upcoming show at Baby's All Right in New York City.
Hey Sophie and Tucker! Thanks for doing the interview. How did you two meet?
Tucker: We both went to Brown but didn't actually meet until our senior year when we were both playing at an art gallery.
Sophie: I was playing acoustic bossa nova song in a trio and Tucker was the DJ that night. He came early and saw what we were doing and ended up remixing one of my songs on the spot...We have been functional together ever since!
Tucker: Her songs were beautiful but painstakingly slow, so I had to spice it up a little and it ended up sounding really cool.

Sofi Tukker is made up of Tucker Halpern, who played basketball at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and Sophie Hawley-Weld, who also went to Brown ... but who definitely did not play basketball.
"I was probably as far from the athletic community as you could get," Hawley-Weld says.
"We never even saw each other once until our senior years, when I had already had to stop playing basketball," Halpern says.

A few years before that happened in 2009, Tucker Halpern joined the Brown basketball team. As a freshman, he started 10 games. By his sophomore year, he was his team’s No. 2 scorer and an All-Ivy League honorable mention.
Halpern believed the NBA was a possibility.

Sofi Tukker (often stylized as SOFI TUKKER) is a Florida-based American musical duo consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They are best known for their singles "Drinkee", "Best Friend", and "Purple Hat".
The band is known for taking heavy inspiration from Brazilian tradition, including writing many of their songs in Portuguese, despite neither of them being from Brazil (Sophie is originally from Germany, while Tucker hails from Massachusetts.) Their melody combines house and EDM with bossa nova and samba, and frequently features lyrics about sensuality, love, and having fun.
