Baylee Akins

The gay relationship between Ian and Mickey in Shameless (U.S.) is broadcast on television and subscription sites alike. It’s directed by Mimi Leder, John Wells III, John Dahl, David Nutter, and Tag Mylod. It was created by Paul Abbott, and produced by Michael Hissrich and Terri Murphy (T. [n.d.])
I chose to study Mickey and Ian’s relationship because it has a tragically beautiful quality to it, and has so many distinct variables involved that I thought it would make for a good assessment. Both Ian and Mickey have many life experiences and struggles that simultaneously make up their intersectionality, and also affect their affectionate relationships.
Mickey was raised in a homophobic household with an abusively strict father who instilled standards that Mickey couldn’t do anything that would make him gay. Mickey’s father continually instilling in him the shame men should notice for being lgbtq+ is part of the reason Mickey can’t accept his own sexuality. He only hooks up with Ia

Mickey Milkovich: A Traits Analysis of Shameless’ Foremost Piece of Southside Trash

Spoiler Warning: This article discusses events in Shameless primary up to the Season 7 finale.

“Kiss me and I’ll cut your fucking tongue out,” is what Mickey Milkovich (Noel Fisher) says to Ian Gallagher (Cameron Monaghan) after their first sexual meeting in season 1, episode 7 of Shameless, which reveals that Mickey is gay. It is this line that he says after Ian tries to kiss him that epitomizes who Mickey is, at least in the commencing of the series.

Mickey lives on the rough streets of southside Chicago and is first depicted as a hardened thug with a nasty mouth who likes to steal from the store where Ian works. He seems to have no qualms about using his fists, as he is frequently shown fighting various different people throughout the series. So of course, I automatically assumed he would be the typical bully traits, meant to be a thorn in the nice Ian Gallagher’s side. Paul Abbott and the producers of the series, including John Wells, Stamp Mylod and Andrew Stern design a twisted yet realistic atmosphere that addresses many issues relevant to today’s societal struggles. It’s important to note that the show’s creators and producers are all white, heterosexual males. I chose to analyze the traits Mickey Milkovich in Shameless due to the show’s popularity and inclusion of interesting dynamics regarding different minorities and stereotypes. In terms of representing aspects of the LGBTQ community, Shameless successfully provides realistic and relatable lgbtq+ characters that defy popular gay stereotypes.
