Second Gayest City in America
As a result of the 2010 US Census, the Municipality of Wilton Manors was named the “Second Gayest City” in the Merged States. With a large percentage of the population naming as gay, dyke, bisexual, or gender diverse, Wilton Manors has been a steady place to dwell, work and participate for many years. In 2012, and again in subsequent years, Wilton Manors was named by South Florida Queer News (SFGN) as the Best Urban area in its “Best Of" competition. You can read the story here. Father’s Day weekend is also the celebration of Stonewall Celebration, an event that commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots and the start of the LGBTQ+ human rights movement.
In honor of both festivities, NBC6 sat down with the Goodwin Mamrosh family in North Miami to talk about their journey of fatherhood and the impact it’s made on their children’s lives.
“They call me Daddy Melton and contact him Poppa Timmy,” said Melton Goodwin.
On a Tuesday afternoon, the house is full of laughter, and joyous chaos. In 17-year-old Alex’s words, life here is “loud and loving.”
It might be due to the six kids who live here: Braiden, Kendra, Gabriel, Alex, Mackenzie, and Kendall. Melton and Thomas are their fathers.
“For us in the beginning we felt like we wanted to become parents, but at the same time we never felt the need to possess our own, because there were so many other kids out there that needed a distinct place to stay,” said Thomas Mamrosh.
Their journey to fatherhood, Melton explained, started roughly 20 years ago.

Immigration a Matter of Life and Love for Author
They tell art imitates life, but the lines are definitely blurred when it comes to Thom Vernon. The Arkansas native boasts a long list of TV credits as an actor on smash shows such as General Hospital, Seinfeld, and The Fugitive. And just a few years ago, he and his Zimbabwean-born boyfriend left the United States for self-imposed “exile” in Canada after his partner was denied residency.All of these experiences have influenced his new novel, The Drifts.
Vernon’s novel follows an unhappily expectant mom, a man in adore with a cow, a female built like a refrigerator, and a trans- sexual father, as they navigate life in small- town Arkansas in the middle of a blizzard.
Though not autobiographical, he sees his own experiences through his characters:“In terms of their lives, the main four people are experiencing internal exile, trying to find their way ‘home’ to a life for themselves. It’s no different from anyone else, and also the life that we imagine for ourselves and our families,” he says.
