LGBTQ Representation in Marvel
Across the world, an audience of millions looks up to Marvel superheroes as role models and symbols of virtue. So what communication do young viewers receive if the vast majority of these heroes are straight, white, cisgender males? For a company that prides itself on diversity, Marvel Studios includes shockingly few LGBTQ characters in their films and TV shows. Why is this? And why is more voice in Marvel films and TV essential?
As many fans perceive, far more LGBTQ characters can be found in Marvel comics than in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
“I experience like [representation in the comics] is definitely a lot better, because there’s less attention on the comics. It’s more hidden,” said Anette Martinson, co-president of the Clayton High School Gender and Sexualities Alliance (GSA).
Early on, Marvel comics dealt with the issue of prejudice. Anti-mutant sentiment in the X-Men series can be seen as an allegory not only for racism, but also for homophobia and transphobia. Marvel Comics has introduced the world to a plethora of superheroes and villain characters that present a range of diversity for readers and viewers. While Marvel Comics have not always been good at providing LGBTQ+ representation, they hold made significant improvements in the last decade. Many LGBTQ+ characters have been pushed to the forefront and given important storylines. For example, Wiccan and Hulkling finally got married as apart of a large crossover event called Empyre. Nico Minoru and Karolina Dean have been key players in the recent Runaways comics, and their relationship has been explored.

Also, Iceman and America Chavez have had solo titles and included on team books. However, some of these characters are underutilized and not as well known by the mainstream comic audience.

Both Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) and Hulkling (Teddy Altman) were members of the Young Avengers which was formed when the regular Avengers had disbanded. They were attempting to mimic the looks and codenames of original Avengers. Wiccan taking a observe similar to Thor (even originally calling himself Asgardian), and Hulkling taking a name that obviously comes from the Hulk, even though neither character had any connections to Thor or Hulk.
