Love, Lies & Emerald Cards: Bowen Yang and Han Gi-chan Star in Rom-Com Remake of The Wedding Banquet

Min (Han Gi-chan) needs a green card to stay in the U.S. with his boyfriend, Chris (Bowen Yang), but he doesn’t want to jeopardize his confidence fund from his wealthy, old-fashioned Korean grandparents by coming out as gay.

What’s a guy in love to undertake but marry his boyfriend’s close ally Angela (Kelly Marie Tran)? In send back, Min will deliver Angela and her girlfriend, Lee (Lily Gladstone), money to pursue IVF.

That’s when a classic rom-com plot is hatched. The foursome is on the verge of pulling off the scheme when Min’s suspicious grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) shows up in Seattle to meet her future granddaughter-in-law.

Min and Angela’s attempts to play it direct — and artificial they’re really in love — move about as adequately as expected.

Joan Chen is especially hilarious as Angela’s mother, who embraces her identity as an LGBTQ+ ally a little too wholeheartedly. Although the remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 Oscar-nominated production loses steam when it veers into earnestness, it adv recovers its comic footing.

The Wedding Banquet | Official Trailer | In theaters Friday,

Out gay writer/director Andrew Ahn’s crowd-pleasing remake of “The Wedding Banquet,” out April 18 in area theaters, is a nifty update of Ang Lee’s classic 1993 film. The new version makes some significant changes to the first. Here, Min (Han Gi-Chan) is in a five-year bond with Chris (Bowen Yang) when his grandmother, Ja-Young (Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung), demands that he return to Korea to take a job in the family business or lose his wealth.

Hoping a green card marriage will hold him in the U.S., the closeted Min plans to marry Angela (Kelly Marie Tran), a lesbian who is trying to possess a child with her girlfriend Lee (Lily Gladstone). Angela accepts the deal, because Min’s cash can pay for the IVF treatments. Of course, complications ensue when Ja-Young arrives, wanting to plan a wedding banquet.

Ahn’s warm, winning comedy is amusing as the characters’ lies reveal deeper, heartfelt truths about love and family. The filmmaker spoke with PGN about re-making “The Wedding Banquet.”

Bowen Yang and more show on how 'The Wedding Banquet' uplifts queer Asian voices

"The Wedding Banquet" remake hits theaters today, and ahead of its debut, the star-studded cast spoke with "Good Morning America" about how the motion picture is updating the conversation about love, marriage and visibility.

While the film isn't a direct remake of Ang Lee's 1993 clip, this updated version by director Andrew Ahn, does tell a similar story and follows Min (Han Gi-chan), a gay guy who proposes a grassy card marriage to his friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) in exchange for her partner Lee's (Lily Gladstone) expensive in vitro fertilization treatments.

Plans for Min and Angela's elopement are upended when Min's grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung), surprises them with an extravagant Korean wedding banquet, and Min is forced to cover the truth of his gay partner, Chris (Bowen Yang).

For Ahn, seeing Lee's film for the first time inspired him to produce films that were about queer representation.
