    Sure, it’s not common to find a welcoming pack of gay-loving mountain men deep in the rural stomping grounds of all forest and no gay bar, but things are different in the Cerulean Ridge Mountains. Just an hour and a half from Asheville, the mountain resort community of the Highlands is about 4,000 feet high above sea level and is no stranger to gay visitors. Blame it on the location’s lush foliage and breathtaking landscapes. Due to the perfect mix of elevation, hip temperatures and (unusually) rainfall, it’s the only ‘rain forest’ in eastern North America, which ensures it’s like no other place on earth. But what truly makes it stand out is its vibrant gay community, the least suspecting aspect to a remote mountain village. Many businesses are gay owned (including the ever popular Mountain Fresh Groceries, which serves some of the town’s best sandwiches), and even a member of the local Chamber of Commerce is openly gay. The Highlands is the type of place city folk can throw on some hiking boo
