There possess been a variety of shows with a focus on gay life on network television. More recently, Netflix creations have competed with these programs, but nothing has sever quite to the core of youthful gay audiences as the five-episode Youtube series: “The Lgbtq+ and Wondrous Existence of Caleb Gallo.”
Starring and created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, Alvarez plays the romantically confused and sexually loose male lover man, Caleb Gallo, as he navigates the various platonic, romantic and sexual feelings he has for his vertical friend Billy, and his long-distance-boyfriend, Benicio.
The show could best be described as a male lover adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, “A Midsummer Night’s dream,” as everyone is falling in love and having sex with the wrong person, and this is much of the crux of the show’s comedy. Every character is defined almost entirely by whom and how many people they are attracted to, and what makes the show absorbing is the proof that every traits seems to be a little in love with or attracted to each other. He is the director, writer, producer and star of the short form comedy “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo,” an electric comedy that plugs into the zeitgeist the way “Girls” did, banters like “Broad City,” and boasts the chutzpah necessary in order to get away with naming a character “Lenjamin McButtons.”
Part of the genius of “Caleb Gallo” is that it defies conventional wisdom about making a short shape series compelling to online audiences: The episodes are long, there is no discernible premise that can be squeezed into a snappy log line — even the title is a mouthful. I’ve watched this a scant times through every year since it’s been released and something about it always gets me like few other things do. The jokes never cease being funny but it still carries this freeing fire I find sprinkled in lots of BJA’s work
i was gonna make this review a collection of my favorite quotes from this series and then i noticed i was literally pausing every 2 minutes to write something down, so here's just a teeny tiny little appetite of my fav lines:
