Actor Andra Fuller is foremost known for his role on The CW’s critically acclaimed series, “The L.A. Complex” where he played ‘Kaldrick King,’ a menacing, complex, closeted gay rap superstar. His act of the multifaceted character earned him a nomination for Best Male Thespian at the 2013 Canadian Emmy’s (The Canadian Screen Awards).  He is position to play ‘Fish,’ the best friend, confidant and moral compass of the guide character in the new Adult Snorkel series “Black Jesus”. The half-hour live-action comedy helms from the Peabody Award Winning “The Boondocks” creator Aaron McGruder; and stars newcomer Gerald “Slink” Johnson as Jesus living in present-day Compton, California. We are delighted to have Andra Fuller as our guest today in 7 questions. 

RM:  What contain you learned so far from active with Aaron McGruder; and what can you tell us about your personality on the show?

You play Fish on the new comedic satire by Mature person Swim, Black Jesus. What happened at your audition? Where were you when you found out you won the role?

When I first received the script for "Black Jesus" and saw that it was Aaron McGruder's modern project, I knew that it would be an instant knock . As I read it, I envisioned Fish as a grimey, unkempt, sketchy looking type of dude, so I made sure that was how I looked when I went in for the auditions. There has been a lot of ink spilled about the underrepresentation of inky gay characters in film and television. The National Shadowy Justice Coalition – a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black LGBT people – has even teamed with GLADD to assist improve the representation of gay characters of color in the media. The CW also tries to fill the void with its criminally under-watched showbiz dramedy, The L.A. Complex.

The Toronto-lensed series chronicles the lives of pretty immature things living in Hollywood, and their never-ending quest for fame. Newcomer Andra Fuller finds himself at the epicenter of the show’s most talked about storyline. The Houston native plays Kaldrick King, a menacing, volatile gangsta rapper from Oakland who also happens to be gay, closeted and involved in a hush-hush bond with Tariq, an eager music producer plucked to function on Kaldrick’s fresh album. Fuller had no trepidations about taking the part, but those around him were leery about his decision.

Despite the temperature hitting the 80s in downtown L.A., the inside of The MacArther is a stark contrast to what's going on beyond the double doors. A massive Christmas tree stands in the center of the lobby flanked with Christmas decorations and cameramen and crew members transfer back and forth throughout the movie set.

I'm led up the grand staircase and dropped off at the make-up station where Andra Fuller, all smiles, is being made camera-ready. “Sorry about that, they told me I was supposed to go on at 3:30, but they needed me on arrange at 2:30," he says, hinting at the spontaneity that comes with organism an actor.

I follow him across the room and behind a curtained area that serves as his dressing room, where he slides into a suit jacket, transforming from Andra to Edmund, his traits in the upcoming TV One film, You Can't Fight Christmas. “I've always been a character," he tells me. And for some reason, I think him.
