Gay men with horses

Real Men Ride Horses by Ken Shakin

The Gay Men's Squeeze (GMP) title from 1999. All copies are new, but show the age of their publication.

Before Brokeback Mountain broke your heart, this story story collection told the sordid truth of the wild west, in history, reportage and plain gossip, journalism posing as fiction. Cowboys come sterile, Indians tell all, and the composer as voyeur writes down the stories. Ken Shakin wanders around the pink desert, where the heat is so thick not only the animals acquire naked, and an America is revealed, stripped to the waist.

Ken Shakin is the author of numerous books including Love Sucks (1997).

Please note the text font is on the compact side so if you struggle to read books printed in smaller font, it's probably a good idea to give this one a swerve.

"Set in the New Mexican desert, Shakin's book is a collection of startlingly vivid, often witty stories, many informed by a strong sense of the history of the area and the cultural differences of those who live there, as well as their sexual and gender variations." —glbtq.com, the Encyclopedia of GLBTQ Culture

We Can Make the Equestrian Community — and the Planet — a Better Place for Queer People

Pride Month is a time to celebrate gay identities in all their gorgeous forms, but also an opportunity to have conversations about how to make progress — socially, legally, in all ways — for queer people.

I use “queer” as a way to encompass the entire LGBTQIA+ community for a few reasons. First, acronyms are imperfect in their inclusion, so I use queer simply as an umbrella term to mean people who are not straight and cis (identify with their gender assigned at birth). I also like it for its political and theoretical implications. Queer, to me, means standing outside of the normal while also denying that such a thing as “normal” exists. Gay draws people in while pushing oppressive narratives out.

I came to this view on the synonyms queer, and to queerness itself, over the course of my life in a variety of communities. I’m a non-binary person (meaning I don’t identify as male or female), an academic, a journalist, and an event rider. I’ve taught at just about every level from preschool through master’s students and hold been a community organizer my entire adult life
