Vacant Birmingham Gay Bar Devastated By Four-Alarm Fire

On Friday morning, a catastrophic blaze lit the vacant red-painted standalone building at 5120 Fifth Avenue South near Crestwood. The abandoned property was once home to The Phoenix, before that The Tool Box — lgbtq+ bars active during the '90's and mid-2000s. According to sources, The Phoenix closed its doors for good in October 2009.

Birmingham’s LGBT community on social media via Facebook erupted with strong disbelief, many expressing heart-aching gloom over the fate of the venue never reopening. "That large cloud of smoke over Crestwood/Avondale is the Phoenix," Don Mills wrote, prompting many people to recall their memories and even toss out the apparent ill-timed "phoenix rising" jab. Will Sheppard posted a snapshot from a display from the app NextDoor showing the large inferno from several blocks away. His only words in the caption: "RIP senior Phoenix club."

Several hours later, Mills posted a picture of what was left of the rubble, representing only a small pile of debris and rubble where the building once stood.
